Martin McDonagh is one of the more notable of the younger generation of Britain’s playwrights. Although concerned with both unthinking and more calculating violence of our times.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane premiered when McDonagh was twenty-five and was an immediate success. It opened at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway on 1 February 1996.
The plot centers around a seventy-year-old woman, Mag, and her daughter Maureen, who live together in Leenane, a small town in Connemara, Galway. Maureen is desperately unhappy with her life and is searching for a way out of her meaningless existence.
