Junior Board Job Description and Application Information

The Junior Board of Shattered Globe Theatre will consist of a maximum of 10 members, who actively work together to: 1) provide leadership and technical skills in line with SGT’s mission and programming, and 2) foster enthusiasm and support for Shattered Globe Theatre among the next generation of theatre patrons. Directors will have responsibilities in the following areas:

Governance

  • Establish standards and expectations for Junior Board members.

  • Identify, nominate, consider and elect new Directors and Officers.

  • Educate and involve fellow Directors.

  • Attend regularly scheduled Junior Board meetings, held once every other month, and additional committee meetings as needed.

  • Maintain a basic understanding of the business affairs of the organization.

  • Maintain awareness of the activities and major policy decisions of the Board of Directors.

Volunteer Services
  • Provide volunteer technical skills in at least one of the following areas for the benefit of SGT:

    • Advertising
    • Development planning
    • Event planning
    • Grant writing
    • Marketing planning
    • PR
    • Study guide development
    • Web development
    • Website design/maintenance

  • One to two times per production, deliver curtain speech prior to Shattered Globe performances and represent SGT in the theatre lobby during pre-show, at intermission and after the show.

  • Volunteer time as available and recruit additional assistance for activities such as mailing assembly and poster and postcard distribution.

Advocacy/Financial
  • Take personal responsibility for introducing at least ten new paid patrons to SGT productions each season, whether through single ticket or subscription sales.

  • Be an enthusiastic community advocate for the artistic mission of Shattered Globe Theatre, especially among Chicago’s young professional community.

  • Plan and implement annual Junior Board benefit and actively promote event ticket sales among peers and colleagues. The Junior Board will have primary responsibility for successfully executing and meeting financial goals of this event.

  • Attend main gala benefit and other events at single ticket or sponsor level, and promote attendance at such events among peers and colleagues.

  • Attend all company productions and events as a subscriber.

  • Be actively involved in the solicitation of funds to support the organization, its mission and activities.

Officers and Named Positions:

Chair
The Chair of the Junior Board is elected by majority vote of the Junior Board, subject to final approval of the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The chair conducts Junior Board meetings according to established rules of procedure and works closely with senior staff. The Chair will hold his/her position for no more than two consecutive two-year terms, but may re-elected to the position after a two-year rotation to a different Board position or a one-year rotation off of the Board.

Vice Chair
The Vice Chair is familiar with the duties of the Chair and should be able to assume them in his/her absence.

Secretary
The Secretary keeps accurate minutes of the proceedings of each Junior Board meeting and coordinates the actions needed to be taken following the meeting in accordance with the discussed topics.

Liaison to the Board of Directors
The Junior Board Liaison to the Board of Directors attends all meetings of the Board of Directors in a non-voting capacity to report on the major activities of the Junior Board. When significant collaboration between the Board of Directors and the Junior Board is required, the Liaison to the Board of Directors will facilitate the process.

Benefit Chair(s)
The Benefit Chair(s) provides primary leadership for the planning and implementation of the Junior Board’s annual fundraising event.

Terms of Service
Directors and officers of the Junior Board serve renewable terms of two years and are subject to annual evaluation.
